    This unusual stone Cameo features a black-and-white double-faced Roman soldier motif which is a classic image for this sort of ring. The double face really displays the banding in the onyx, with the top profile being the black band in the onyx, the underneath profile being the white band of onyx, and the tan stone color as the base. Cameo is the art of carving a layered material, creating a portrait or landscape with the difference in the colors. While traditionally done in shell, banded onyx has been used in cameo work - particularly in Greece and Italy - for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.
